Due to the adverse weather predicted for the coming weekend both the Vics Got Anglers competition on the canal and the Open day at Knottallow have been cancelled. Both to be rearranged for later in the year. The comp is to be sometime in September. Don't have a date for the open day, but keep watching the blog. Please advise anybody you thought was coming to either event. Thanks and sorry. We don't have alot of success with the weather and open days. Obviously don't book your holidays for the dates we pick!!!!!

Had a fw hours on knott friday after work on getting over the style i could see dave helm and adam (sorry adam i dont know your surname) both info fish as i walked round and had a quick work with dave he commented on the size of the fish we got delivered at the last stocking.

After walking around and lookng for moving fish i caught 2 cracking sized fish both on beetles on filling in the catch return book i could see that in a 2 hour session dave had caught 7 trout on a F Fly and Adam was still fishing and catching on a regular basis.

If you have not been up in a while you dont know what you are missing.

Knottallow Update

New stocking yesterday and were they corkers. Had previously chewed our suppliers ears about the size of the fish on previous stockings being a bit on the small side. He's saved some of his better fish for us this time - all well over 13 inch and averaging a pound and a quarter.
What can we say about the weather? The last few weeks comments on the catch returns have had nothing but wind, wind, wind! Rod averages had got up to 3 and 4 previously, but slumped again to 1.5 to 2.
This sunny weather has brought out damsels, so try for them during the day when the fish get used to them. Evenings have also seen the start of the caenis hatches on the quieter nights. They are not called the anglers curse for nothing, but at least you know what they are feeding on. Small nymphs (16) and emergers work for me (not all the time!).

Had a hour on knot the weather was cold and windy (nothing new there then ) nothing much showing i was hoping to christen my newly acquired orvis Helios !! .

After looking through my fly box's i decided on a old favourite of mine a black and peacock spider ( a go to fly for me this season and a confidence fly for me ) a hour later i had 3 nice trout and had christened my new rod job done !!!!

Well, we're back to wind and rain. Hope it's not going to be another dodgy season.
Things were just looking up after the last stocking. The new fish seemed to have stirred up the residents.
Fish have been caught on a variety of flies with buzzer imitations such as spiders, f-fly, and black pennel doing the business. There has also been a big olive hatch about the beginning of May and bigger f-flies and greenwells catching. The old stand by beetle catches well for me when I am not sure of what is hatching. Catch returns for week ending 30th April had a rod average of 2.5, and 4 for w.e. 7th May. Just when things were improving, it started to blow, but there is still fun to be had in the relative calm under the goarse bushes. Went up last night in wind and rain and caught 6 and lost as many on spiders and shipmans. There were still fish rising to hatching buzzers even in these conditions. Tight lines.

Short Session

With the wind finally dropping off i decided to try knott for a few hours in the float tube.With nothing much showing i opted for a black and peacock spider and was rewarded with 8 trout.

The icing on the cake was a 18 " trout and another 2 tagged fish (see photos below)

Today we took delivery of 125 brown trout this was the 3rd stocking of the season, all the fish were in the 11 to 13 " size bracket and in excellent condition.

The Season So Far

As usual the weather did us no favours for the first few weeks with catch returns well down. Things have picked up well with this bit of warmer weather last week as indicated in Al's blog. The last week or so has seen rod averages of about 4 with people catching on a variety of flies. There have been some tremendous hatches of black buzzers, mainly smallish size 14 and 16 hook imitations, but some bigger getting on for 10's. As usual at this time of year they are predominantly black. Similarly the terrestials that will be making an appearance will also be black - Hawthorn flies, black gnats and beetles. We should also be seeing the early variety of daddy longlegs, in this case brown or fawn. The advice therefore is to keep an eye on the returns book and again look around. Thanks to all who fill in the details -it helps everyone. Just a word about the tagged fish this season - beware, there are some stonkers!

This week has seen me out and about. I had a few night sessions on knott. The fishing has been excellent with a healthy rod average. People are catching on a variety of methods - Simon Butterfield had 7 out on spiders and Dave Helm had 5 out using beetles, and not to be out done Paul Procter had 10 + using hoppers.

Just a quick blog to thank the UAA Members and good folk of Ulverston who turned up to the Canal Clean up this morning.

A good job was done in a couple of hours with a couple of us in Chest Waders in the water, a canoeist and the rest on the banks.

We didn't manage to clear the litter from the area where the abattoir used to be so this will be organised in a couple of weeks. I will keep you posted.

Had a few hours on Knott after work today. There was a gentle breeze and the odd fish topping.

Fished a olive nymph and using a slow figure of eight retrieve and caught fish.

Looking at the returns book, people have been catching mainly sub-surface. If you have not been up, why not give it a go? One piece of advice - wrap up as it's still on the cold side

New Season 2011

Welcome all to the new season which kicks off on Tuesday 15th March.
The first stocking of the season has just taken place with 300 fish introduced on 25th February. As usual the weather did not do us any favours and again it was blowing and hissing down, so much so it was not suitable to take any photos. Just look at the archive - there's no difference from last year!!!
Still have a few members not yet taken out their tickets. Please feel free to call round my house to collect.

Waking to find frost on my car window this morning i was not in any hurry to get up knott I finally pulled onto the car park about 12.30.

Getting out of the car the first thing to greet me was a Dung Fly as it settled onto my jacket was that a lucky omen,not in any hurrry to fish i looked over the style for any rising fish i could see a few fish topping

On went my trusty Dung Fly and approaching the water I started casting at the odd rising fish, first fish was this 18 1/2 inch (see below) i had another one as well.

In winter its all about picking your day and your time as a rule of thumb i fish the warmest part of the day (10 am to 3 pm) the fish are still rising to dry flys and when i booked out i noticed Dave Helm has been catching on Dung Flys and Beetles

Give it a go you might be pleasently suprised but one tip wrap up well.

Knott Sunday 7th Novenber

With the weather set fair I decided to have a few hours on knott. Pulling onto the car park I could see a few fish topping.

I set up a long leader and crept over the stile and sat and watched the fish for a while. After 10 mins on went a size 16 shipmans buzzer as the fish were in the clear shallow water, not the easiest place to try and cast a fly to. Creeping near the water I could just make out 2 fish making their way toward me. I cast out and it landed about 5 feet in front of the fish. Up came the fish and sucked the fly down, I tightened into it and it was soon brought to hand and released.

After my mate Greg phoned me, he appeared 15 minutes later to fish for an hour and a half. I noticed a few dung flies around on the grass buzzing around. So on went a CDC dung fly - first cast and another brownie had come to hand. A frantic 30 mins later and another 4 trout had fallen to the dung fly and as is the way of these things as quick as the action had started it all went quiet again. During this time Greg got into the act netting 2 brownies himself on a Dung Fly.

If you pick your day and the weather's with you then look forward to some good sport on the tarn. Remember this year it's open till 30th December.

Fly Tying and Entomology Day

Sat 14th was the second fly tying and entomology day in the Old Friends Pub on Soutergate. It was well attended as usual with a few new faces and the usual regulars from the Committee.

Dave Helm was on hand to tie a few patterns, and he also gave a very useful entomology demonstration. How to match the hatch. Dave Anderson also gave advice and tied a few of his favorite patterns.

Knottallow Catch Reports

Hi All,
Sorry I haven't put anything up for several weeks, but since the weather turned pear shaped not a lot has been happening.
Unfortunately the rod average has dropped below two and I don't have any reason. Usually it's put down to July Dog Days, but for different reasons - hot sunny days with no fish moving, etc. Fact - fish don't have eye-lids so when the sun is up they generally drop a bit deeper. But this is not the case at the moment, what with all the wind and rain! At least the water level has gone back up again. Funny, but since we have had this input of fresh water there have been no rises to speak about.
The caenis should be tailing off, but with the bad weather they may be a bit delayed and carry on for some weeks yet. There are plenty of sedges starting to appear, but again not much sign of fish rising to them. We also get some big buzzers at the back end, so all is not lost.
Fishing numbers dropped to around 20 per week. Maybe because of the wierd conditions. But don't dispair, according to the records there are nearly 500 fish still left in. Keep trying, good luck.

Knottallow Tarn Open Day Sunday 13th June

Today was the annual open day at Knottallow Tarn. After a fine start the summer weather tried its best to dampen the day but it was great to see everyone fish and tryout the tackle through the rain. It was great to see so many new faces and some of the old ones too! Everyone had a great time.

Jim Fearn and Tony Riley (Rio Pro Guides) were on hand and gave demonstrations on a variety of casting techniques.

From single and double handed Spey casting through to double hauling and roll casting with smaller rods, it's great to see the experts casting. Tony and Jim also helped everyone along with one on one tuition where needed and helped to iron out a few folks casting problems. Additionally they give out helpful advice on which rod to choose for which type of fishing and also demonstrated Leaders and Line set ups.

They also brought along a vast selection of Vision rods, laced up with those fabulous RIO lines for us all to try (and wish we owned!).

Thanks also goes to Dave Anderson for the endless cups of coffee, tea and the great sausage butties!

We even had a visit from Nigel Thompson from Lakeland Fly Tying. Nige always says he's really busy so it's nice to see him at Knotyallow.

Tony and Jim are sponsored by Guide Fly Fishing and thanks to them for the gear.

On behalf of Ulverston Angling Association I would like thank Jim and Tony for their time and effort. Even though the weather turned nasty the guys were on hand for the full day and gave some tremendous advice.

Wayne Young nets two massive Carp on Ulverston Canal!

Wayne Young decided to hit Ulverston Canal last weekend as the Carp were spawning on Sandhall Ponds. For his efforts Wayne netted a 17-15 Mirror and a 22-6 Fully scaled Common.

Catch Returns to w.e 5th June

It's been a busy couple of weeks since I last posted the returns, so here goes.
For w.e. 29th May, 34 people fished with a catch of 90 fish. This works out at rate of nearly 3 a trip and this includes 8 nils.
A fresh stocking of 100 fish went in on Friday, 30th May. Usual excellent quality, but unfortunately only 12 inch fish instead of our usual 13+. Problems with the supplier not being able to feed in the stew ponds because of the mixed weather, and hence not growing on as quickly as they should.
W.e. 5th June - well everybody seems to have taken advantage of the fresh stocking (probably livened up the residents as well). 58 fished with a return of 245 fish giving a rod average of over 4 and only 3 nil returns.
Fish have been caught on a variety of flies, with no particular pattern to give you any advice.
Daytime fishing has been good for me with a variety of dries off the wind bank. The sheep seemed to be stirring up the alders which were in the grass and getting blown on. Now there is one for you - it is often said that fish don't take the adult alder!!! Try a bushy dry or sedge imitation. And here is another one - fish don't take adult damsels. Just wait and see. There a few about and if the weather returns to a bit warmer then you should see them going out over the water as mating pairs and the fish going berserk - following them under the surface and then leaping out of the water, sometimes bombing them.
Evening fishing has now come to inevitable - caenis. Everbody knows these even if it's only to curse them getting into your eyes, ears, you name it! Well at least you know what the fish are feeding on. I try small nymphs at the start of the rise swapping to emergers and dries and then back again, and back again, and back again, ditto. It's not easy, but keep trying. One trick is to cast right on the fish's nose and then lift the rod tip to pull the fly quickly in front of it - sometimes works!
The long dry spell has seen the water level drop. As you will have noticed we have blocked up the causeway again to try and retain as much water in the big pond as possible. Unfortunately with the lower water levels and recent warm spell the weed has gone mad. Treating it in these conditions can be a bit iffy - the last thing we want to see is the water getting de-oxygenated and fish suffering.

fished up knott most nights last week the fishing is still on top form and there are plenty of fish about (and caenis fly as well) .I have noticed a few new faces fishing if you have any photos of your catch or catch returns feel free to blog on here is all pretty informal and it will be nice to read a report other tham myself or dave !!!!

Bank Holiday Bonanza

With the weather conditions perfect i headed up knott,after looking at the catch return sheet i could see the rod average is still nice and high and just about everyone is catching fish.

I wandered round the tarn and observed plenty of fish feeding i headed towards the causeway and opted for a Shipmans Buzzer (size 14 +16) and casting to the rising fish i managed to connect with a few,after the rises stopped a put on a klink hammer in the same sizes and continued to catch.

All the fish were in excellent condition and fought hard if you have not been up for a while do your self a favour and have a trip up the place is on top form and full of fish.

Chasing the ripple

With the temperature threatening to get into the low 20 degrees I headed up Knott at 8.30 thinking I would have the place to myself.Dropping onto Knott 4 other anglers had the same idea as me.I had a quick chat with Albert (pettigrew) and after a brief chat we both set out on our separate ways.

The tarn was manly flat calm but now and again we would get a nice ripple on the water heading for the ripple Albert caught steadily.I headed into the small pond to fish the ripple as well and caught one and pricked a few all on a red muddler hopper (see picture) or you could get them using the heave and leave method ( casting a hopper out and let it drift round in the wind and wait for a take.One thing i noticed the fish are right in the side and as you can see the picture on the right albert was standing a good 5 yards from the water and casting most if not all of his fly onto the grass so it was only his tipett and fly that was in the water.

Catch Returns

Hi all,
Been on hols so missed a few weeks with the returns.
Looks like I have also been missing some good fishing.
Over the last 3 weeks the rod average has been about 3 and nil returns less than a quarter of those fishing so things are looking up. Fishing times are still varied with no particular time of day being better than another, but as the days lengthen the fishing should shift to early mornings and late evenings.
Successful flies vary a lot, but mostly buzzer imitations like spiders, shipmans and suspenders. The old favourite beetle has been doing well. Black gnats should still be around but the Hawthorns should be just about finished. Unfortunately we don't get many olives, but again these should be about over. There also seeems to be a lot of daddies, so try a hopper, but watch out for smash takes.
We have blocked off the causeway to try to keep the water level up in the big pond as we still have a leak in the dam and with some decent weather forecast this seemed the best plan. There are plenty of fish in both sides.

A Quick Visit - One hour and ten minutes for three Brown Trout

I ventured up as it was the first warm day for weeks and thought I'd see if there was anything going on at last knockings. As I set up at 8pm a few anglers were on the tarn including Austin Robbie who'd already had four on a hotspot spider. Fish were starting to browse the rippled surface showing their dorsal and tail fins and swirling at the surface.

Small white winged insects were hatching off the water which I initially took to be Caenis. When one landed on me I took a closer look to see it seemed like an 'olive' bodied midge and I guessed a size 16 olive shipmans buzzer would do the trick. I was pleased to take a fish on second chuck. After taking a second, Austin changed to the same Olive Shipmans and took two more himself.

After I'd caught a third the hatch seemed to finish and I went home happy!

I decided to have a few hours up knott sunday night got there just before 6 to be met by a cold blustery wind,when the wind dropped fish could be seen topping regulally.On went a small spider pattern and after about a hour of searching out the water a lovely brown trout came to the net.

After 1 1/2 hours i decided to call it a night as i was walked off Austin Robbie and his fishing mate had just just arrived.Checking the catch returns a few days later i noticed Austin caught 8 and his mate had caught 4 all on spider patterns (no doubt one of austins legendary hotspots!!!!!)

Better than working

Decided to take the afternoon off work and head off up Knott hollow tarn to try out my recently purchased float tube.

On arrival the conditions were looking good a bit of a breeze and nice and overcast, after deciding on a Damsel nymph I ventured out onto the water and made my way into the middle of Knott.

An hour later I had caught 3 brown trout and missed a few. Moving to the bank for a rest I noticed a few trout rising in the shallows so casting into the wind I caught another 2 brownies

All in all a great result christened my float tube and an afternoon off work does it get any better!!!

Float Tubing on Knottallow Tarn

Today saw me up at Knottallow as Dave Anderson kindly offered to show me how to fish using a float tube. As you can see from the photo's below it wasn't the best of days, cold and a bit blustery. But, using the wind Ando drifted down the tarn, and in a short 45 minute session he caught trout. I myself stopped on the bank and struggled to catch. Was it the float tube that gave Ando the edge? It's up to you to decide!

Knottallow Catch return-w.e 17thApril

Very little to report - very similar statistics to last week. 57 visits with a rod average of just under two again and 18 nil returns. The same type of flies seem to have been catching with the fish being rather selective when the wind drops right off. 7 yellow tagged fish were caught this week. When the sun gets through it warms the place up and brings on a fairly decent hatch of black buzzers with some larger ones making an appearance now - hook size 14 or even bigger.

Tagged Fish - Knottallow

Pictures of a tagged fish I caught on Wednesday, 14th April. Sorry they may be a bit out of focus but I couldn't keep my hand from shaking and they were taken on my phone. It was the only fish I caught that night in almost flat calm conditions with the fish being rather selective. The fish took a size 16 black suspender buzzer; it just sucked it in, hardly a take at all. Please remember these tagged fish must be returned. The fish seem to have spread out now and a lot have moved into the small pond. Try your luck in there but be aware there is still some weed remaining. Have fun.

Knottallow Catch Report -w.e. 10th April

Well, at last the weather has turned for the better, although there is still a cool wind. If you fished on one of the bright sunnier days you would probably think there were no fish in the place; come along in the evening and the water is bouncing with fish. Catch returns show that there were 54 visits this week with 86 fish caught which gives a disappointing rod average of just less than 2, and unfortunately 21 nil returns. Again unfortunately, there was no pattern in the timing of the fishing, so can't suggest anything other than perservere. There have been some superb buzzer hatches over the weekend, but unfortunately over a limited time span, mainly during the evening, which have generated some good rises - so does this mean there is a change coming along with the warmer weather?

Knottallow Catch Report -w.e. 3rd April

Well, the weather has not put some of us off. We could just do with the wind dropping. 28 people fished with a rod average approaching 4, and only 6 nil returns. Nine yellow tagged fish were caught - those I caught were in excellent condition. Please keep recording them in the returns book. Again most successful flies appear to be black, with buzzers and spiders coming out on top. Fly hatches have been mainly small black buzzers, down to 16 and 18 hook sizes, so that explains the success of the artificials.

The odd pike being caught around the glaxo bridge and the auction straight, though nothing of any size.

Week 2 at Knot

Hope this past week is not a sign of what's coming for season ahead. Wind and rain -could really do without it and it does not look a great deal better for this coming week!
Well, here's the stats:-
28 visits, 84 caught, 3.0 rod average, 8 killed, 6 nils and 2 red tagged fish caught.
A mixture of flies used - connemara black, black pennell, bibio, shipmans, the odd lure but mostly wets and spiders. Conclusion - anything small and black with a hint of red or silver. Most success appears to be fishing into the wind with the fish tucked close into the bank.
Previous entry showed a new batch of fish going in, so give or take the weather, things can only get better.
Please return all tagged fish and record any captures in the returns book. The last two seasons were red, this year yellow.

All went well even though the stocking wagon left the road earlier in the morning, obviously arriving after the scheduled time.

Fish were in excellent condition. This stocking included about 20 tagged fish of a larger size ( 2 pound plus). These have a yellow tag near the dorsal fin. These fish must be returned!!! Please record any caught in the comments column in the returns box, thanks.

They settled in really well and could be seen rising all over. Actually they do not rise but gulp in air to re-inflate their swim bladders after the journey here.

Float tubing on Knottallow

Tubing has been introduced on the tarn this year with the following rules:-

No more than 2 tubes on the water at anytime
Life jackets must be worn
No fishing within 25 metres of bank anglers at all times.

If anyone would like ago just contact me and I will arrange free tuition, no gear needed though you will have to suffer size 11 chest waders if you dont have your own..

Canal Catches last week-24/3/2010

More anglers now appearing with the milder weather.
Mainly after pike with a 9lb and 10lb being caught using ledgered sardine, a few jacks also caught all during the day.
Most fish caught either side of the Glaxo railway bridge, though the top straight between the town basin and main railway bridge is producing pike.
Carp fishing has begun but no catches except the odd early tench around the 3lb mark.

First week at Knottallow

Just collected the return sheets and considering the mixed weather, a pretty good set of results.
42 visits with 130 fish caught and even a red tagged fish overwintered from last year (or even the previous year). This gave a rod average of just over 3 which is good considering 13 out of the visits were nil returns.
The fish were shoaled up to start with and if you didn't find the shoal the fishing was bleak. The fish were tending to spread out a bit towards the end of the week, so things can only improve. There again we also need the weather to do the same!
Personal success came from fishing spiders into the wind from the bank just to the right from the stile.
Another stocking coming up shortly, so that should liven the residents up.

Opening day treble

Headed up Knott about 9 o’clock to be met by a very strong biting wind (nothing changes then!). Walked round the water and scattered a few fish lurking in the side. Fished for 3 hours and managed to nick 3 out using green/black buzzers. Fished by just casting out and letting them drift round in the wind. All in all it was great to get out fishing and back among the fish. Just need the wind to drop off!
