new season

with the new season upon us knott has been stocked with a number of fin perfect brown trout,with the weather looking ok for the beginning of the season i hope to see a few of you up there.

like years gone by i will be getting the website up and running with fishing reports and also the possability of a open day on knott so watch this space

Knottallow Tarn Open Day

Everybody, both members and non members, welcome
Tea, Coffee and bacon/sausage buns available

No gear needed (but if you have your own, it would help) just turn up and join in
·       Introduction to Knottallow Tarn
·       Entomology (Bug Hunting) /Matching Flies (fly boxes on show)
·       Casting demonstration by with Tony Riley (AAPGAI)    (including introduction to equipment, materials, leader set ups and knots)
·       Learn to fly fish – demonstrations of general techniques and different styles

New Season

With the new season up and running and knothallow stocked the fishing has been a bit challenging for the first couple of weeks,with the wind blowing hard.

But when the wind  dropped then the fish have been looking up and the rod average is healthy,Albert petigrew and his mate Jimmy have been having a lot of success with small spider patterns and later on bibios and black hoppers

Adam has been catching lots of fish on diawl bach  and  other small nymphs and even i got into the action catching fish on the ever reliable beetle patterns.

The tarn is fishing really well so if you haven't fished yet this year have a look up as the fishery is on top form at the moment

With the weather a bit better trips up to knott have been on the cards,i have been snatching a few hours after work.

The fishery has been in good form with plenty of fish topping and everyone catching lots of fish,on looking at the signing in book it was clear to see that people are catchng on a variety off methods from lures too dry's and  austin has been catching on his  secret hot spot spider !!!!!!

Myself i have been using small beetle patterns and on weds night there was a trickle of olives hatching off these had the fish on top and mopping up the olives.

If you have not been up lately i suggest you have a trip up as its fishing its head off

With the weather set to break i took a few hours off work and headed to my local club water at knottallow tarn the weather conditions were just about perfect with a light warm wind blowing across the tarn.

The fish were on the top and feeding well on getting to the water i could see lots of black gnats on the water,i caught lots of fish on various size gnats.

Second Stocking

 



This was the scene at the carpark on Tuesday. The road in from Kirkby Moor was blocked with drifts up to 2 metres deep. This part was only just passable. The snow had frozen and with the temperatures not rising much can't see it disappearing quickly.



A sample of the fish. As you can see the tagged fish have gone in. This year the colour is green and 40 fish were introduced at an average weight of 2.9 pound, so look out for some corkers. Please remember to record the colour of the tag if you catch one of these - last year the colour was green. As per last blog one of these has turned up already.



As you can see the tarn was partially frozen.
The water was only just above freezing, but the fish went in OK.
Don't think the conditions will improve much in the near future.

Recent Fishing

Have managed two trips so far with reasonable results.
Fished all afternoon on Saturday and never saw or touched a fish until about 5.00pm (would think there were no fish in the place!), when a small rise started in the calm water near the stile bank. Previously tried weighted damsel nymph and corixa with no effect. Just swapped to a size 14 beetle fishing round from the point when I spotted the rise. Missed the first fish I covered - blow off the rust! Managed three fish before I had to go. One of these was a superb green tagged fish that had overwintered - estimated weight about 3pounds. Chuffed to bits. Sorry no photo - wanted to get it back asap.
Tried again Monday afternoon from 3 till 4.30 and managed seven on a mixture of spiders and beetle.
Could see that the fish are still shoaled up and cruising the edges, but still feeding. Other people have had success with a variety of lures - assume they got among these shoaled fish as they appeared to chase anything. Tried a Kate McClaren pulled across the surface and had many chases but never connected. It was then that I spotted that, even they were swirling around, they were actually rising. That's when I swapped to the beetle, dropping it into the area the fish were and just leaving it. Takes were confidant.

Stocking for New Season

First net full going in on 26th February

Number 2 - Can you believe it was NOT raining.
Beautiful sunny day.

Number 3 - We didn't actually count the number of nets but we put in 300 fish.

Few days later, partially frozen and still fish rising. Difficult to see,
 but they are just on the edge of the ripple in front of the causeway.

All looks good up there. Tickets are now available. Looking forward to start of season on 15th March.

indian summer ?

With the weather more like june than october i had a few hours on knott the tarn was flat calm and there was quite a few fish moving.I fished dry;s and caught a few trout the best being this small fingerling trout my 2nd one caught and as you can see they like a f fly

with th rivers up and un fishable tony riley suggested a afternoon up knott on the float tube, tony had just taken delivery of visions new float tube and he was eager to put it through its paces.


On pulling up into the carpark the weather was just about perfect a light ripple and nice and warm we set up and it wasnt long before we were both into brownies,off the bank dave helm was picking up fish from the bank casting to rising fish all in all a good day

After finishing work i decided to have a few hours fishing up knott the weather was overcast with a few showers after 2 1/2 hours i had caught 5 trout casting to rising fish i caught them on a shipmans buzzer and a olive f fly.Dave helm was also on knott and adopted the same tactics of covering rising fish with good effect catching several fish.

Just a reminder dont miss the open day on the 14th july starting 10 o'clock (see events page on website) come along bring someone who has never fished before and have a go, the fishing is free plus there is free tea,coffee and food

This sat afternoon i met up with albert pettigrew as he was keen to have a go at float tubing on knottallow as you can see from the pics it was quite choppy but between us we had several fish out mainly on spider patterns

Canal Clean up

Lee Gundry and the other local lads are meeting on the 3rd of june at 10 am for a clear up of the towpath/banking  (meet by the scrapyard at the top of the canal).

Everyone welcome the more the better bring gloves,bags etc

Stocking May

 The stocking in April was cancelled due to transport problems with the Supplier, so we have combined April and May stockings. The tagged fish also went in today and what a sample they were! We always think that fish are bigger than they actually are but not in this case. The average weight of the tagged fish was 3.8 pound and there were some corkers well in excess of that. Get a grip of the one on the left - nearly had Austin in the water. Please remember that these fish must be returned and again please record any caught in the returns log. Cheers, Dave the Treasurer

Tuesday in the tube

With a couple of days booked off i had a few hours on knottallow tarn the conditions were not ideal blue sky and for the most parts flat calm.

I set up and was on the water by 4.30 with a few fish topping i put on a small beetle and had a few fish out but it was slow,so i switched to a spider pattern and was into fish straight away.They wanted the fly a few inch's under the surface i lost count of the number of fish i caught,and to cap it all i caught the biggest trout i have ever caught out of knott (see pic)

sat afternoon

Sat i took a trip up to knottallow looking in the catch returns book i could see the rod average is nice and high, i had a quick walk round the water and could see a few fish topping.

I opted for a f fly and a small beelte pattern  and  casting to rising fish i manged to winkle out 5 trout,Dave helm was on the opposite bank and he was into fish straight away on his way past he said he had hem all on a beetle pattern.

knott sunday

Had a few hours on knott this morning fished 9 till 11 had 3 trout and hooked and lost the same amount all on a size 14 beetle, Dave knocker Nixon was fishing he had several fish all to dry's.

There were plenty of fish topping and all the fish were in superb condition.

canal update 2012

Reports show carp being caught up to 23lb with sea end basin and middle basin producing catches,,,Tips are a little pre baiting.Also pike being caught again an all 3 basins ,pleanty of doubles up to 18lb being reported..
